As we all know during lockdown many people have chosen to add a pet to their family. It may be a puppy, hamster, cat, bunny, duck or even a pig,  just as a new baby comes along with the whole anxiety, the baby shower, baby stuff shopping galore, nursery decorating and so on, that’s the same way that most people will look forward to having a new pet. Here are a few tips on how to prepare your home for your new pet.

Decide on a Place For Storing Pet Supplies

Supplies range from the pet food to toys, all those supplies will require somewhere they can be stored for easy access because you will not want to store them along with your kitchen food, imagine someone forgets and serves pet snacks to the kids :).

Install A Pet Door

With a pet in the house, you don’t want to keep opening the door for your cat or maybe dog, installing a door will allow your pet to move from room to room or go outside without getting trapped anywhere. Remember though, expect your cat to bring home some feathered friends from time to time, its suggested they do this as a present for you, so be thankful.

Get Furniture and Flooring Pet Ready

This is the time to think about your furniture and floors, do you have seats that can easily be scratched by claws or chewed by sharp teeth? Before you train them not to be destructive, they will initially wreak chaos in your home. Unless you are bringing an already trained pet, taking precautions about your furniture and carpets is essential.

Get Toys

Most importantly toys go a long way to keep your pet happy, your pet might get bored at times, especially when you are out at work, watching the TV or doing chores. At Haus Maids we love pets, and we would love to help you by sending our cleaners to your home to free up some time to play with your new pet rather than cleaning your home. We offer domestic cleaning in Farnham, Alton, Guildford, Godalming, Winchester, Bishops Stortford, Cheltenham and Milton Keynes. Remember though always buy toys from a reputable company because you definitely don’t want anything happening to this new member of the family.

Keep Wires and Precious Items Safe

A hanging electrical wire within reach of your pet is not advisable, cable tie any hanging wires and put them in a safe place. Fragile objects like vases, picture frames and so on should be kept well out of reach of your new family member.  Remember animals can get destructive and you don’t want your precious items getting destroyed.

Do A Sweep

Take time to go through your home, looking for things that might cause harm to your new pet.  Keep your shoes, laundry and kids toys where they are supposed to be.

Create Restricted Areas In Your Property

Areas that are harmful to your pet like the fireplace or the kitchen should be sealed off with a stairgate that you can open and close whenever you want to get through.

Also, not all of your friends and family will love your new family member as much as you will, you might entertain a guest who doesn’t  like or  could be allergic to pets, in this case, you can use your new gates to keep your pet away from your guest. And remember the gates should be tall enough to prevent your pet from becoming Eddie the Eagle.

Make a Daily Plan

Buying or rescuing a pet is the easy bit, the real commitment comes with how you will take care of it and this includes time for training, feeding, grooming and walks. Your family could take turns to help in doing this. If your pet is a dog then you could let your kids take it for walks and groom it on weekends.

Prepare A Resting Spot

Decide on an area where your pet can rest, this will become your pet’s own personal space.  Place a soft blanket, a litter box and the food and water bowls.  Consider a place in your house where there isn’t a lot of traffic. Make sure it is a spot where you can watch them from most angles, whether you are in the kitchen or living room.

Keep the House Quiet For A While

Your pet has just moved in, it would be a good idea to avoid lots of visitors in the home as it may cause stress to your pet.  Sure, you will want to show friends and family your new pet, however give your pet time to adapt to new surroundings. You could invite one or two people and let it learn to meet new people one step at a time, soon it will be happy to share its new home with guests.

Getting Your Children Ready

Before your pet arrives at your home, sit your kids down and explain to them that a pet will soon be coming and what is expected of them. This will enable them to cooperate with you in making the pet comfortable to your home.
