Your Guide to DIY Window Cleaning by Haus Maids Winchester
Take a good look at your windows. Are they looking a little grubby? It’s easy to stop seeing the smears when you get used to them.
Fortunately, it’s easier than you might think to give them a quick polish. Whilst it’s best to leave the outside of windows on the top floors of your house to a professional window cleaner, you can absolutely give their insides a clean.
Below, our house cleaners in Winchester have shared a simple step-by-step guide to window cleaning for you to try.
Step one: Prep your windows
First things first, you need to give the whole window area a quick once-over. This will remove excess debris from surfaces and prevent you from spreading dirt as you clean.
Take a microfibre cloth and use it to dust the glass, frame and windowsill. If you come across any stubborn stains or dried-on marks, use your cloth and a gentle window cleaner to buff them away.
Window cleaning tip: You can make a DIY window cleaner with a simple mixture of vinegar and warm water in a 1:10 ratio.
Step two: Scrub the frame
Next, wash the window frame. You may need to give it another scrub later on, but getting this out of the way first will allow you to get right into grooves and corners without messing up your streak-free windows.
Step three: Clean the glass
Now for the most important step: polishing the glass! Take your DIY window cleaning spray and use it to dampen a clean microfibre cloth. Avoid spraying the window directly, as window cleaners can damage some window frames, and it can be tricky to clean all the glass before it dries.
Start from the top down, using overlapping strokes to get a sparkling finish. Then, grab a dry cloth or paper towel to buff the window dry. Your windows should now be clean!
Step four: Wash blinds and curtains
As a final touch, take this opportunity to clean your blinds or curtains. This usually involves using a vacuum or cloth to remove dust, then either wiping them down or spot-treating stains. You can check out our pro curtain cleaning tips for more advice.
And there you have it! Your windows should now look significantly better, free from oily smears and fingerprints.
