Keep reading for a step-by-step guide to window cleaning at home!
Step 1: Create a cleaning solution
Here’s what you’ll need for a simple window-cleaning solution:
- About 7.5 litres of warm water
- A teaspoon of dish soap
- Half a cup of white vinegar
Simply mix it all in a large bucket and you’ll have what you need for a streak-free finish.
Step 2: Protect your flooring
If you’re working on the inside of your windows, lay down some towels to catch any dripping water. We’d also recommend removing your blinds or curtains to prevent them from getting damaged.
Step 3: Wash the frame and sill
Next, use your vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove dust from your window frame and sill. You could also use a dry microfibre cloth if you don’t have a vacuum on hand. The more dirt and debris you can remove before introducing your window cleaning solution, the easier it will be to get a streak-free result.
Step 4: Clean your window glass
Dip a clean sponge into your window cleaning mixture and use it to gently scrub the glass. Start at the top and work down. Then, take a squeegee and wipe away the solution, pulling it down in a straight line from top to bottom. Make sure you wipe off the sponge between each swipe.
Step 5: Dry and polish
After ensuring you’ve removed as much liquid as possible, use a dry microfibre cloth to buff the glass to achieve a shiny finish.
You can repeat this same process on the other side of the glass. If you can access the outside by opening your window, that’s great. Otherwise, you’ll probably need a ladder — and an extra pair of hands to hold it securely. Generally, we suggest hiring a trained and insured professional window cleaner to safely take care of your outer windows.
