The Top 5 Cleaning Mistakes Homeowners Make in Farnham

We’ve all made a cleaning faux pas at one time or another, whether it was accidentally bleaching something you shouldn’t have or using the wrong cleaning equipment.

We’d love to say it’s the thought that counts, but when you’re putting time into keeping your home clean, you want to make sure your efforts are worthwhile. So, to that end, our house cleaners in Farnham have shared the top five cleaning mistakes they see most often and what you can do to rectify them.

1. Rubbing stains (instead of blotting)

This is one of the most common cleaning mistakes our Farnham home cleaning experts see.

We get it: the temptation to scrub away at a stain on your carpet, clothes or soft furnishings can be extremely tempting and may feel like the right thing to do at the time. But in reality, rubbing at stains usually just makes them worse, as you end up working the mark deeper into the affected material.

Instead, we recommend dabbing at the offending substance with a clean, dry cloth. If it’s a wet stain, you can pour some baking soda onto it to soak up excess moisture and draw out its colour without bleach.

2. Using too much product

As with many things, less is more when it comes to domestic cleaning products. You typically only need a little bit to be effective, so you can save a lot of money on cleaning products simply by using the recommended dose listed on the packaging.

People love to use liberal amounts of liquid dish detergent, for example, but if you purchase a good-quality product such as Fairy, you’ll find you only need a drop.

What’s more, using too much product could actually do more damage than good. If you’re too liberal with your laundry detergent or surface spray, you’ll probably find that it leaves a sticky, greasy residue behind — not what you want when you’re looking for a sleek cleaning result.

3. Using the WRONG product

You can tackle many cleaning tasks with one product, right? Wrong! Although there are some hero ingredients like white vinegar that can be used on a number of surfaces, you might not be getting the sparkling results you want if you’re using the wrong stuff for the job.

One cleaning mistake we see often is using regular surface cleaning sprays on glass. This will likely leave streaks, especially if you don’t have a clean microfibre cloth to buff it away. Plus, if you have small children, pets or friends with allergies, you should double-check that your cleaning products are suitably hypoallergenic or pet-safe.

It’s also important to ensure you’re not mixing chemicals that shouldn’t be combined. For example, you should never mix bleach with other cleaning products, only water. In case you didn’t already know, vinegar + bleach = chlorine gas — not something you want to mess with!

4. Neglecting cleaning tools

We know, we know… A bad workman always blames his tools. But when it comes to house cleaning, you really do need to invest in the right gear (and maintain it) if you want to get the best finish.

Equipment like kitchen sponges can harbour a lot of nasty bacteria. Switching to a brush might be a better option, as researchers have proven that germs like salmonella are less likely to survive on these tools.

Also, when was the last time you changed your mop head or emptied your vacuum cleaner? If you want to avoid spreading dirt and bacteria in the spaces you’re trying to clean, make sure you’re keeping up with these simple tasks.

5. Not cleaning regularly enough

This is a cleaning mistake most of us are guilty of. To avoid property damage and maintain healthy and attractive living environments, you must clean regularly — probably more regularly than you think.
