How to Remove Any Stain at Home | Chandler’s Ford & Eastleigh

Have you had a spillage or another incident that’s created an unsightly stain in your living space? We’ve all been there.

Fortunately, all is not lost. By keeping a few cleaning tools, ingredients and skills in your back pocket, you can leap into action and remove any stain with ease.

Our house cleaners in Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh share their top tips for getting rid of common household blemishes below.

Red wine stains

Red wine is a huge culprit for household stains. However, it’s easier than you might think to remove it if you act fast.

Start by covering the wet stain with salt or baking soda to absorb moisture and the dark colour. Then, wipe it away and rub fabric or dish detergent into the stain before soaking it in cold water for a couple of hours and blotting it dry.

Coffee/tea stains

We drink these beverages every day, so it’s only a matter of time before you spill somewhere you shouldn’t!

Once again, baking soda will come in handy here. Apply a thick layer whilst the tea or coffee is still wet to draw out the colour and moisture and wipe it away with a clean, white cloth once it’s dry. If a mark remains, try using a fabric-safe stain remover — Ariel or Persil detergent should do the trick if you don’t have a specific stain removal product, or you can try white vinegar.

You may also find that if you don’t use a dishwasher, your mugs become stained with tea and coffee, too. To get rid of stubborn stains that won’t come out with a gentle scrub, try soaking them in diluted bleach for a few hours and then wipe clean.

Ink stains

Ink stains can get everywhere before you know it. Removing ink from your clothes, which is where these stains usually are, can be done with things you probably have lying around the house.

In a pinch, our Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh home cleaning experts suggest using a solvent like rubbing alcohol, hand sanitiser or even hairspray to dilute the stain and make it easier to wash. However, test this on a small patch of fabric before going too crazy, as these products can cause further damage.

Grass stains

If you want to learn how to remove any stain, you’ll also need to know about getting rid of grass marks from your soft furnishings and clothes.

The best thing to do is apply a stain remover directly to the affected area and rub the fabric together to dislodge the stain. Hopefully, the mark will then come out with simple laundry detergent. If it doesn’t you can try applying some white vinegar and water solution to remove the leftover colour.

Chocolate stains

It’s time to whip out your trusty baking soda to remove chocolate stains from clothes, carpets or furniture.

Dampen the stain with cold water and rub in a paste of baking soda with your hands or a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub out the stain. If you act quickly, the chocolate should lift right out.

Of course, you could also use a stain remover or laundry detergent to get the same effect if you have them on hand; just check that whatever you use won’t cause more harm than good.

Tomato sauce stains

Tomato can cause terrible stains, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying it in your food. If you’ve splattered sauce down yourself or across your kitchen, the American Cleaning Institute recommends the following approach:

  1. Remove as much of the sauce as possible.
  1. If the stained fabric is washable, run cold water through the back of the mark immediately, being careful not to force it deeper into the material.
  1. Rub a liquid detergent into the stain in circular motions.
  1. Add a mild bleaching agent (only if the material is white or you’ve tested it for colourfastness).
  1. Repeat the last two steps until the stain is gone, holding it up to a light to check.

Still see the remnants of your spaghetti bolognese? Apply a stain remover, wash the item as normal and leave it to soak if the stain remains, ensuring you don’t let it dry and set in.

So, there you have it! Now you know how to remove any stain around your home.
