Haus Maids Guildford: Top Tips for Keeping Your Whites White
Between sports, playdates and family trips to the park, summer activities are fun for all the family — but not so good for your white clothes and furnishings.
Fortunately, our house cleaners in Guildford and Godalming have shared five top tips for getting stains out and preserving your whites for longer!
1. Bleach your greyed whites
Over time, many of our white clothes can become dull by being repeatedly washed with other soiled items. To brighten them, you can try soaking them in diluted bleach as per usage instructions.
Just make sure you use protective equipment, choose a well-ventilated area and don’t mix bleach with any other cleaning products, as this can create harmful (even fatal) fumes.
2. Use a warm or hot cycle
Whilst you can still get good results using an eco-friendly cool cycle, we’d recommend using a hotter wash setting (try 40°C) for tough stains.
However, be careful to separate coloured fabrics from this wash, as colours are more likely to bleed at high temperatures. Plus, some materials shouldn’t be washed at a high heat, so ensure you check the care label before you hit start.
3. Pop a colour run sheet in the wash
Whites or colours? That is the question…
If you have a predominantly white shirt or cloth with a small amount of colour on it and you’re unsure what wash to put it in, try chucking in a dye catcher for extra peace of mind. You’ll find these in supermarkets, or you can try making your own with water, washing powder and an old scrap of fabric!
4. Dry your whites in the sun
Take advantage of nature’s bleach when the sun is out by hanging your whites out to dry in the garden. If you’re able to use this option, you’ll also save money on your electricity bill by avoiding the dryer.
5. Try a cupboard remedy
We all know and love many stain removal products on the market, such as the popular Vanish Oxi Action powder. However, they can be expensive and aren’t great for the environment. So, why not use products from your pantry?
Simply add a cup of distilled white vinegar or baking soda to your washing machine to help lift stains and return your whites to their original colour without bleach.
