What you’ll need:

  • Mild dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • An old toothbrush
  • A spray bottle
  • A clean, white cloth

Step 1: Identify what the stain is

More often than not, you’ll already be aware of what has created the offending mark, whether it’s pet urine, a beverage, blood or something else entirely. Still, it’s important to be as sure as possible, as different substances require different cleaning processes. The sooner you find out what it is, the better your chances of knowing how to clean carpet stains effectively!

Step 2: Start blotting!

The first thing you need to do is remove as much of the liquid as possible. Take your clean cloth (make sure it’s colourless to ensure it doesn’t bleed into your carpet fibres) and use it to gently absorb the stain. Never rub, though, as this will only spread the stain deeper into your carpet.

Step 3: Make and test your DIY cleaning solution

For most stains, a mixture of dish soap and warm water (about one teaspoon of soap to one cup of water) should suffice. For pet urine stains, try a 1:1 ratio of white vinegar and water. And if those aren’t quite tough enough, you can try sprinkling some baking soda over the stain before scrubbing it away with more dish soap and water. Salt also works well for stubborn red wine stains.

Once you’ve prepared your cleaning solution, make sure you test it on a hidden area of your carpet to ensure it doesn’t cause any discolouration.

Step 4: Apply your cleaning mixture

Spray, sprinkle or pour your homemade solution onto the stain and let it sit for up to 10 minutes to get the best results. Then, blot the area again using a clean cloth or paper towel to get rid of the remaining stain.

Step 5: Rinse and dry your carpet

Dampen another clean cloth with warm water only to remove any product residue. Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned the stain away, you can press a clean, dry towel over the wet patch and let it dry completely before vacuuming away any last traces of dirt.
