Haus Maids Farnham: How Often Should You Clean a Mattress?
Did you know we spend about 26 years of our life sleeping? That’s about a third of the average person’s lifetime. So, it makes sense to invest in your nighttime comfort with a high-quality mattress.
The question is, how often should you clean a mattress to keep it fresh and hygienic? You might be glad to hear it isn’t as often as you might think. Still, it’s important not to skip this household cleaning chore if you want to keep dust, germs and other allergens out of your bedroom.
Keep reading to discover how frequently your mattress needs some TLC. Plus, discover our tips on how to do it properly from our house cleaners in Farnham.
The ideal time to clean a mattress
As a general rule, you should aim to deep clean your mattress every six months. You might be able to get away with waiting a little longer if it’s not particularly dirty, but regular cleaning will help extend your mattress’s life cycle. Flipping your mattress every time you clean it can also encourage even wear.
Our Farnham home cleaning experts recommend a seasonal approach. Every year, add mattresses to your spring-cleaning list. Do it again just before Christmas to prepare for the new year.
If you have a spillage or notice your mattress is starting to smell, don’t wait to clean it. You don’t want to create a lot of extra work for yourself, but leaving stains to set in will make it harder to remove them.
Quick tips on how to clean a mattress
Here’s a quick guide to cleaning your mattress:
- Remove all bedding. This is pretty obvious, but don’t try to clean your mattress with anything still on it. Throw your bed linens and mattress covers into the washing machine whilst you tackle the bed itself.
- Vacuum thoroughly. Vacuum the entire surface of the mattress in horizontal and then vertical lines (or vice versa) to remove all dust and debris. Use an upholstery attachment to get into every crevice.
- Spot-treat stains. You don’t want to get your whole mattress soaking wet, but you do need to spot-clean where needed. Make a solution of cleaning detergent or dish soap and water and apply it to the stained area with a microfibre cloth. You can also use a DIY baking soda paste to tackle most stains.
- Sprinkle baking soda. Speaking of baking soda — it’s a great ingredient for absorbing moisture and removing odours. Apply it all over your mattress and leave it for a few hours before vacuuming it away again.
- Repeat on the other side. Now’s the time to flip your mattress. Repeat the above steps, making sure you’ve checked the care instructions for your mattress type.
It’s as easy as that! You should now have a clean and fresh-smelling mattress that’s ready to use as soon as it’s dry.
