Step one: Prepare for the job

Before you learn how to clean your oven, make sure your machine is off and completely cooled. The last thing you want to do is burn yourself or damage your cleaning materials!

Then, remove the racks from your oven and soak them in a basin of warm, soapy water. Leave them overnight if possible to get the best results.

Step two: Treat the inside

Whilst your racks are soaking, you can start working on the inside of your oven. Prepare a DIY cleaning paste by mixing half a cup of baking soda with some water until it’s a spreadable consistency. Apply the paste to the inside of your oven, avoiding any heated elements to prevent damaging them. Make sure you leave a thick coating of cleaning paste on any stubborn dirt to help it lift cleanly. Leave this solution to soak for at least 12 hours (or overnight with your oven racks, ideally).

Step three: Scrub your racks

In the morning, your soaked racks should be ready to scrub. Grab a brush or a sponge and start working away any tough grease or burnt-on grime. Once you’re happy with the level of clean, give your racks a rinse with clean water and leave them to dry whilst you work on the rest of your oven.

Step four: Clean the glass

Wondering how to clean your oven glass? This is the final touch that will make your oven look like new — and you can make light work of it with a couple of cupboard ingredients.

Our Alton home cleaning experts suggest using your baking soda paste to sort out dirty oven windows. Leave it sitting on the glass for about half an hour before wiping it clean and buffing away any streaks with a dry microfiber cloth.

Step five: Wipe it clean

To get a real professional-looking result, you need to ensure you’re getting rid of all the set-in grime. If you don’t have a heavy-duty chemical cleaner to do this, just use some white vinegar in a spray bottle.

After wiping away the excess, take your vinegar spray and apply it on the inside and outside of your oven. In a few moments, it will begin to fizz and help loosen any remaining baking soda or grease residue. When you wipe it away with a clean, damp cloth, you should find that your oven is sparkling clean and ready for the clean racks to be replaced!
