End-of-Tenancy Cleaning in Godalming: Don’t Miss These Jobs!
End-of-tenancy cleaning is a huge task that many people underestimate. Once you take all your furniture and belongings away, you’ll quickly find problem areas you didn’t know existed — from stains on your carpets to marks on your skirting boards.
It’s always better to be prepared before plunging into a big cleaning job. So, our house cleaners in Godalming have shared six of the most commonly missed end-of-tenancy cleaning tasks to help you leave your home in the best possible shape.
1. Shelves and drawers
It’s easy to forget about things you can’t see. However, a landlady, landlord or new tenant will inspect the inside of cupboards, drawers and closet shelves when they come to view your property.
So, remember to give these areas a thorough dusting and disinfection, working from the top down to ensure a spotless finish.
2. Bathroom grout
You might not notice it building up over time, but mould can quickly compromise the appearance and cleanliness of your bathroom. These warm, moist spaces are perfect conditions for bacteria, inviting them to grow around seals and in grout lines.
To clean these areas effectively, make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and water in a 2:1 ratio and rub it onto the grout with an old toothbrush before wiping it away.
If this doesn’t do the trick, you can purchase a more heavy-duty chemical cleaner from a supermarket. Use a waterproof caulk gun to touch up any areas where the grout is particularly dirty or cracked.
3. Light switches and fixtures
This end-of-tenancy cleaning task is easily overlooked, but it doesn’t take long to complete to a high standard.
Light switches are often grubbier than you might think due to their frequent use. Simply dust the panel, wipe it down with a damp paper towel or microfibre cloth and polish it dry. Never spray any liquid on the switch or outlet itself, as this can cause electrical shocks and damage.
For light fixtures, you might need to remove any lamp shades or covers to give them a proper cleaning. Then, use a dry, soft cloth to gently clean light bulbs, being careful not to exert too much pressure on them as this can cause shattering.
4. Door handles
Door handles and other touch points can harbour a lot of grease and bacteria from our hands. So, it’s important to disinfect them with a spray and cloth to remove dirt and leave them shining once again.
For brass knobs, you can mix some white vinegar with water and use the solution to gently scrub the handle with a soft cloth or toothbrush and restore their gleam.
5. Carpets
No end-of-tenancy cleaning session is complete without deep-cleaning your carpets. Sadly, a simple vacuum won’t be enough; you need a steamer to get a professional-quality finish.
These cleaning machines will pull up any stains and hidden dirt that’s been worked into carpet fibres over time. You can hire one from shops like B&Q, or you can enlist a specialist cleaning company like Haus Maids to do the job for you.
6. Windows
Believe it or not, many rental contracts require tenants to take care of window cleaning. Even if yours doesn’t, it’s a good idea to polish the windows in your property to ensure it looks its best from the outside and accommodates the best view from the inside.
Don’t forget about windowsills, either! Excess moisture around windows can invite damp and encourage moss to grow, so take this opportunity to give them a clean if you haven’t already.
Phew! As you can probably tell, end-of-tenancy cleaning is likely to take a long time and a lot of effort to do right. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it all yourself if you don’t want to…
