Domestic Cleaning: Banish Odours in Chandler’s Ford & Eastleigh

Is there an unpleasant smell following you around the house? Do your guests crinkle their noses when they step through the door? Or are you paranoid that there might be bad smells in your home that you’ve stopped noticing?

If you’re tired of fighting an uphill battle against household odour, you’re not alone. It’s normal for things to get a bit whiffy from time to time, but it’s easier than you might think to banish unwanted nasal notes.

Our house cleaners in Chandler’s Ford have shared their top domestic cleaning tips for getting rid of common smells for a fresher, more hygienic living environment…

Get rid of clothing and shoe smells

Without being cleaned, aired out and stored in a clean, dry environment, our clothes and shoes can quickly become a source of household odours.

So, avoid keeping dirty clothes in your closet or piled in your bedroom, and ensure you’re cleaning your laundry basket regularly. Leave your clean clothes to dry completely in a well-ventilated spot, and never put them away still damp. And if they still smell musty? According to domestic cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, you can spray some vodka onto your smelly clothes to help lift odours as the alcohol evaporates!

As for shoes, try this hack: spray them with dry shampoo. It’s also a good idea to store them in one place, ideally in a hallway or near your front door, to contain any bad smells in one place.

Remove bad odours from your washing machine

If you want to do a thorough job of domestic cleaning, you mustn’t neglect your cleaning appliances. Just like you’d clean your dishwasher every now and then, it’s also important to give your washing machine some love to ensure it stays fresh.

Most machines will have a cleaning cycle. But if yours doesn’t, try running an empty hot water cycle with a chemical cleaner or two cups of white vinegar to remove mould and mildew. Wash the detergent drawer with warm soapy water, clean the filter and door seals, and always leave the door open after each wash to allow the drum to dry properly.

Address unpleasant smells in your fridge or microwave

Kitchen appliances can cause many bad smells if left to fester. So, ensure you’re regularly emptying them of old food and removing drawers and trays to give them a thorough clean with soapy warm water.

For your fridge, try leaving an open box of baking soda at the back of it to absorb bad odours. To keep your microwave stench-free, put some white vinegar and water in a microwave-safe bowl and set it on high for five minutes to loosen grime. Alternatively, take half a lemon, put it in a bowl of water, and microwave it again for a few minutes to release its natural oils.

Eliminate the smell of cat urine

To get rid of cat urine odour, you can get special cleaners with enzymes that will neutralise the smell. Otherwise, try spot-treating with (you guessed it) white vinegar before washing it out with diluted dish soap.
