Carpet Cleaning Tips for Homeowners in Cheltenham

Are your carpets in good shape?

There are many reasons to maintain your carpets, from reducing household odours and improving the appearance of living spaces to preventing dust buildup. And yet, one Proscenic study found that over a quarter (27%) of us don’t clean our carpets.

We think it’s about time that changed. So, if you’re unsure how to get your carpets looking their best, check out these carpet cleaning tips from our house cleaners in Cheltenham

Blot, don’t wipe!

Had a spillage? Don’t panic! Tackle it by blotting it with a clean cloth or paper towel to prevent it from spreading.

Wiping or scrubbing at a fresh stain can make it worse, causing damage to fibres and pushing the offending substance deeper into the carpet. Alternatively, blotting will absorb the stain better, drawing it upward to reduce the likelihood of it setting.

Steam to disinfect

Clean carpets are crucial for a healthy home. If not taken care of, they can trap bacteria, dust and other allergens that can be harmful to your family, friends and pets over time. So, it’s important to do more than a cursory hoover sometimes — especially if you live somewhere humid.

Steam cleaning is a great eco-friendly way to kill the germs hiding in your carpets. If you don’t have a ‘wet vacuum’ or steam cleaning machine on hand, you can rent one from a local supermarket or hardware store whenever you want to do a deep clean.

Raid your pantry

One of our favourite carpet cleaning tips is using cupboard ingredients to remove stains.

For example, mix equal parts white vinegar and water to create a DIY spot-treating solution for carpet stains. Pour it over the stain and blot to remove it. If that doesn’t do the trick, try a mixture of dish soap and warm water instead.

Club soda is also a secret weapon for stubborn wine and coffee marks. Pour, blot and repeat until the stain is all gone!

Prevention is key

There are plenty of things you can do to stop your carpets from getting gross. For example, you can enforce a ‘no shoes in the house’ rule to prevent guests from throwing dirt into your carpets or lay welcome mats in entryways and other areas that get lots of foot traffic.

If you really want to stay on top of your carpet cleaning responsibilities, we’d suggest speaking to our expert home cleaners in Cheltenham. They’d be happy to take care of your regular carpet maintenance whilst keeping the rest of your home clean and fresh!
