8 Cleaning Terms You Should Know | Haus Maids Eastleigh

Trying to take control of your household cleaning?

Before you start tackling stains and scrubbing surfaces, it’s important to understand the basic cleaning terms that crop up in common care and usage instructions.

By brushing up on your technical knowledge, you can ensure you’re using your products correctly. What’s more, grasping cleaning language can help you communicate with any professionals you bring on board.

That’s why our house cleaners in Eastleigh have defined eight cleaning terms that you’ve probably seen or even used but might not totally understand. Let’s dive in!

Defining key cleaning terms

Sanitising

Sanitising reduces (but doesn’t completely kill) the number of bacteria on a surface to lower the risk of spreading. Usually, something will be considered sanitised if 99.9% of microorganisms have been removed in 30 seconds or less.

Disinfecting

Disinfection is stronger than sanitisation, killing almost all pathogens on non-porous surfaces. A disinfectant typically requires some time to work, which is referred to as ‘dwell time’.

Microfibre

This synthetic material is made from fine artificial threads. It’s highly absorbent, durable and soft, which makes it ideal for cleaning cloths and towels.

Biodegradable

If something is biodegradable, it can be broken down naturally by microorganisms into non-toxic substances. As a result, it’s considered a defining characteristic for many eco-friendly cleaning products such as laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid.

Detergent

A detergent is a substance or solution containing soaps and surfactants (used to break down grease and oils) with cleaning properties. They can come in powders, liquids or pods and can be effective in both hard and soft water.

Limescale

Limescale is a white, chalky deposit that often forms in locations with hard water. It’s especially common in kettles, water pipes and bathrooms where hard water evaporates, leaving a residue that can reduce appliance efficiency.

Mildew

A type of mould, mildew is a type of fungus that grows on moist surfaces. You often find it in bathrooms where it spreads on flat surfaces with ease. It can smell, cause damage to porous materials and lead to health issues — especially in people with allergies or asthma.

Soft water/hard water

Put simply, soft water has a low concentration of minerals like calcium and magnesium, whereas hard water has higher levels of these dissolved minerals.

Soft water tends to be more desirable as it’s gentler on skin and hair and easier to clean with. Hard water often builds up in pipes and appliances. Fortunately, you can use water softeners to reduce these effects.
