5 Expert Decluttering Tips for Your Home in Winchester

Are you ready for a fresh start? Clearing out unwanted clutter in your home is the perfect place to start.

Maybe your kids are growing up and no longer play with as many of their toys. Or perhaps you’re downsizing and need to reduce the amount of stuff you’re bringing into a space with limited storage. Whatever your motivations may be, we’ve got expert decluttering tips for you!

Our house cleaners in Winchester have shared their best decluttering advice to help you take control of your living spaces once again.

1. Start small

The task of decluttering can be an overwhelming one if you don’t know where to begin. So, our first decluttering tip is to tackle one thing at a time.

Starting with small-win areas, like a drawer or shelf, will give you the momentum to keep going. If you set a realistic daily goal, such as decluttering one part of your wardrobe or sorting through one box of toys, you’ll find that the task isn’t so overwhelming.

2. Use the 12-12-12 challenge

Do you want to make quick work of your household clutter? Try the 12-12-12 challenge from Becoming Minimalist.

This cleaning method is simple. Every day, participants should locate:

  • 12 items to throw away.
  • 12 items to donate.
  • 12 items to be put away.

You can do this as many times as you like until you’ve successfully reduced the amount of stuff lying around the house.

3. Keep, donate, discard

Not ready to commit to the 12-12-12 approach? Keep it simple by making three piles: one each for the items you’re going to keep, donate and discard.

  • Keep — the belongings you truly love and will continue to use regularly.
  • Donate — anything you don’t need anymore but that’s still in a good enough condition for someone else to enjoy. This could also be your ‘sell’ pile!
  • Discard — items that are expired or broken beyond repair. Don’t forget to dispose of things according to your local waste guidelines, recycling where possible.

4. Try seasonal storage

Another of our favourite decluttering tips is to divide your belongings by season to save space. For example, if you’re heading into warmer months, could you put all your heavy coats and jumpers in a vacuum-sealed bag and store it somewhere out of the way? Alternatively, if one of your children is heading to university or moving away from home, could you put some of their bedroom furniture and other belongings into storage?

This technique often comes in handy for tidying outside areas. Pack away your garden furniture and outdoor toys to make more room in the garden and prevent them from being damaged in harsh weather.

5. Stick to a schedule

As with most cleaning jobs, consistency is key when it comes to effective decluttering. So, create a decluttering schedule that works for you — and stick to it.

This could be a 15-minute daily task or a commitment to one weekend every month. Whatever works for you, tackling your household clutter little and often is the best way forward.
