Haus Maids Petersfield: 7 Unusual Household Cleaning Products

Facing a cleaning emergency? Forgot to pick up new supplies? Don’t panic. With a little creative thinking and know-how, you can tackle a number of household cleaning tasks with a few simple ingredients you probably have in your cupboards!

From bad smells to dirty glass and wallpaper stains, you’d be surprised at how easily you can tackle even the most stubborn messes without forking out for the latest products on the market.

Without further ado, let’s check out the household cleaning products our Petersfield home cleaning experts like to use in a pinch…

Ketchup and mayonnaise

Not only are they tasty, but these condiments are also very handy when it comes to cleaning. Mayonnaise can help remove water rings from furniture if you let it sit on the wood for a few hours and then wipe it clean. Alternatively, ketchup is a great polishing agent for copper or brass thanks to the acidity of the tomatoes in it.

Vodka

It’s not only good in a cocktail or pasta sauce… Vodka is a clear liquid with a high alcohol content, which makes it a suitable household cleaning product for disinfecting a range of surfaces.

For tough stains or bad odours, you can use it straight to treat the area. It shouldn’t bleach fabrics, so you’re safe to leave it working for a couple of hours. You can also mix it with water and use it as a spray to clean windows and mirrors, or as a mist to gently kill bacteria on your soft furnishings without leaving an odour.

White bread

Believe it or not, white bread can help gently remove dust and dirt from sensitive surfaces like paintings or wallpaper. All you need to do is dab the area with a small piece of white bread to absorb any lingering grime and leave it looking like new again.

Shaving cream

Shaving cream is a great multi-purpose household cleaning product as it contains a mixture of surfactants and conditioning agents whilst remaining mild and non-abrasive. You can use it on glass, stainless steel or even carpets; simply spray it on and wipe it away.

Toothpaste

Although we wouldn’t recommend using toothpaste as a DIY acne treatment like we did back in the day, our house cleaners in Petersfield would recommend using it to clean scuffed surfaces and shoes.

Opt for a non-gel toothpaste and apply it to a cloth before gently buffing the target surface. Then, make sure you rinse it away to get rid of any lingering residue.

Coca-Cola

Got a rust problem? Dealing with stubborn toilet stains? Coca-Cola could be the solution! Simply pour it directly onto the affected area and let it sit for a while before scrubbing it away and enjoying a sparkling result.

So, there you have it. You don’t need to head to the shops every time you notice something that needs some extra TLC around the house — just have a rummage around your drawers to see what you can find!

Of course, if you’d rather not risk the DIY approach or you’re not sure what the best technique will be to get the best results, you can always give the Haus Maids team a call.
