Haus Maids Petersfield: Tackling the 3 Most Hated Cleaning Jobs
We’ll come clean: there are some cleaning jobs even professionals don’t enjoy doing.
The good news is, that means we’ve worked out how to make these tasks a little easier.
According to our research, there are three chores that we Brits really hate doing: ironing, oven cleaning and toilet cleaning. So, our house cleaners in Petersfield have shared their top tips for tackling these tasks more efficiently and effectively.
Doing the ironing
Is there anything worse than a leaning tower of laundry?
Washing your clothes is one thing — staying on top of ironing is another entirely. This task is especially difficult to manage if you have a larger family with children that produce a seemingly never-ending pile of dirty laundry.
Because of this, many people are deciding not to bother. About 30% of 18-to-34-year-olds claim not to own an iron or feel the need to iron, whereas 90% of people 45 and over own an iron and use it regularly.
With the right approach, you needn’t stop ironing altogether. Try these tips to make this cleaning job more manageable:
- Shop thoughtfully. The fewer clothes you have, the fewer you need to iron. What’s more, you can choose to buy items made from fabric that doesn’t easily wrinkle, such as wool, nylon or polyester to reduce your weekly load.
- Iron selectively. Contrary to what you might’ve been taught, not everything needs ironing all the time. Establish the must-iron items in your regular clothing rotation, such as work shirts and trousers, and only iron other items when you want to wear them.
- Establish a routine. Assigning a specific day of the week to do your ironing can help you feel more organised. The beauty of ironing is that you can do it whilst you do other things, so why not line up your ironing schedule with your favourite show or podcast?
Cleaning the oven
Oven cleaning can be a pretty horrible cleaning job — but only if you let grease and grime build up for too long.
At a minimum, you should aim to clean your oven every three months or more if you use your oven frequently. Here are some oven-cleaning tips from our Petersfield home cleaning experts:
- Pre-warm the oven. Remove all the racks from your oven and put them aside. Then, set your oven to about 80 degrees Celsius before turning it off and letting it cool down enough to work on. In the meantime, you can put your oven racks in a soak of hot water and bicarbonate of soda, leaving them in there for up to 10 hours.
- Use the right oven cleaner. You don’t need a harsh chemical cleaner to get rid of the dirt in your oven. A simple mixture of water and baking soda can get rid of grease and leave your oven sparkling again! Add salt for stubborn dirt, or vinegar to ensure you’ve got rid of any leftover baking soda residue.
- Sweep or vacuum out any loose crumbs. To avoid old grease and food getting baked deeper into your oven, use a small brush (like a paintbrush or toothbrush) or vacuum cleaner attachment to pick up debris you can’t otherwise reach.
Cleaning the toilet
Cleaning toilets is no one’s idea of fun (well, not unless you’re cleaning mad like us!). However, it’s one of the most important cleaning jobs to do regularly to avoid spreading germs and causing permanent damage to your toilet.
Our house cleaners in Petersfield recommend trying these tips to get the best results:
- Use a pumice stone. These are pretty cheap and easy to get hold of and they’re surprisingly effective, as well! Start by soaking it to ensure you don’t scratch your toilet, using it to gently scrub at stains until they’re gone.
- Try a vinegar bath. White vinegar is your best friend when it comes to domestic cleaning. Soak some toilet paper in vinegar and place it directly over any marks in your toilet bowl, leaving it to sit overnight. Then, simply flush in the morning and be amazed at the results! If stains still linger, try tackling them with a pumice stone.
- Sanitise the whole toilet. It’s easy to forget about the rest of your toilet when you’ve spent some time with your (gloved) hands in the bowl. But if you want to maintain a hygienic environment in your bathroom, ensure you’re also wiping down the outside of the toilet and all surrounding touch points, including flushes, taps and handles.
So, there you have it! By following these handy tips, you can make light work of some of the cleaning jobs we hate the most. However, you don’t have to do all of it yourself…
