Tip 1: Tackle it at the source

Dust is a mixture of dead skin cells, hair particles and dirt. There’s no escaping it entirely, but you can certainly take measures to reduce the amount of it inside your home.

Here are a few cleaning tips for stopping the spread of dust:

  • Declutter your living spaces. Your stuff is a magnet for dust. The more things you have, the more dust will accumulate. So, try to clear away unwanted items at regular intervals to maintain a clean, organised home.
  • Shut your windows during the spring. Tree pollen, grass pollen and weed pollen start becoming more densely concentrated in the air around March. Although it’s great to get some fresh air, try to compromise by installing a window screen to keep pollen out.
  • Pamper your furry friends. Pet hair is a common source of dust and dirt, so grooming your cats and dogs should be counted as one of your routine cleaning tasks. Don’t forget to wash their bedding and give their sleeping spots a deep clean once in a while, too.

Tip 2: Don’t add to the problem

Though soft furnishings and interior decorations add a lot of character and charm, they’re probably also adding to your dust problem.

Leather furniture is less likely to attract dust, and hardwood or tile flooring will trap less dust than carpet fibres. You can also opt for dust-proof mattresses and pillow covers to prevent particles from accumulating in your sleep space.

And here’s one of our favourite cleaning tips: Your dusting tools might be making things worse. Make sure you’re using microfibre cloths that absorb dust effectively rather than regular cloths and dusters that only spread it around.

Tip 3: Dust more often than you think

‘Little and often’ should be your mantra when it comes to tackling dust. By dusting all your household surfaces and vacuuming your floors every week, you should start to notice dramatic improvements.

If you want to minimise the amount of dust-removal work you have to do, investing in an air purifier with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is a great solution. You can also install a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels low in the summer months, which will help deter dust mites.
