Haus Maids Cheltenham: 5 Common House Cleaning Myths

We’ve all been told a few house cleaning hacks in our time, from ‘newspapers are good for cleaning windows’ to ‘Coca-Cola can clean your toilet’. And although some of these tips and tricks are genuinely effective, there are plenty of misleading ones circulating out there, too.

With that in mind, our house cleaners in Cheltenham have compiled a list of five common cleaning misconceptions with advice for doing domestic cleaning right.

Myth 1: Vacuuming ruins your carpets

This one used to be quite true. Older vacuum cleaners had a ‘beater bar’ that was known to damage carpets, but more modern machines have soft rotating brushes that are much gentler on carpet fibres.

As a result, you can hoover as much as you’d like to without ruining your carpets. We’d recommend hoovering as part of your weekly house cleaning routine to get rid of excess dirt and dust in your home.

Myth 2: Feather dusters remove all dust

We’ll be honest… Most feather dusters aren’t very effective. They’re more likely to spread dust around than pick it up because they aren’t absorbent.

However, there are dusters on the market that do a good job. For instance, ostrich feather dusters trap dust and ensure it doesn’t get spread around your house. Alternatively, a simple microfibre cloth with some water will do the trick.

Myth 3: Bleach cleans everything

Bleach is a great product for a lot of house cleaning tasks. It works as a stain remover and a disinfectant, making it a useful tool to keep in your cleaning cupboard. However, it isn’t always the best option for every surface.

On its own, bleach isn’t the best at cutting through grease and dirt. Sometimes, you need something with a more abrasive texture, such as baking soda, to remove grime buildup on kitchen stovetops and counters. And remember: never mix bleach with anything other than water. Otherwise, you might create chemical vapours that can be harmful when ingested.

Myth 4: More product = better results

Sometimes, less is more when it comes to house cleaning. You’d be surprised how far a drop of good-quality washing-up liquid can get you — no need to keep buying the stuff every week!

What’s more, using too much product can actually do more harm than good in some cases. For instance, using too much laundry detergent can damage your washing machine and leave residue on your clothes.

Myth 5: Air fresheners eliminate odours

Unfortunately, this isn’t exactly true. Whilst these products can mask bad smells, they don’t get rid of the source, meaning they’re more of a temporary fix. The best way to effectively eliminate odours from your home is to commit to a regular house cleaning schedule that will keep the root causes of bad smells at bay.
