How to Clean Children’s Play Toys Properly | Haus Maids Ware

Your children’s play toys might be cute, but are they clean?

Your kids’ most-loved toys get dragged around pretty much everywhere. So, it’s important to make sure they’re as hygienic as possible before they put them in their mouths or get grime all over their face and hands.

With that in mind, our house cleaners in Ware have shared some of their expert tips for cleaning children’s toys safely and effectively.

Check the toy type

First and foremost, work out what type of toy you’re cleaning. Different materials require different approaches, so make sure you check before diving in.

  • Electric toys must never be submerged in water. Instead, use a gentle disinfectant wipe or soft cloth to wipe away dirt and germs.
  • Plush toys like stuffed animals are usually machine washable, but check the care instructions to avoid accidents.
  • Wooden toys can’t be soaked. However, you can use a damp cloth and mild soap to get them clean.
  • Plastic toys can often be submerged in a solution of warm water and dish soap to loosen grime.

Try a vinegar solution

If you want to avoid using harsh chemicals on your children’s play toys, use white vinegar and water. You can create an effective, natural cleaning solution by mixing these liquids in equal parts and using it to wipe down the toy. Vinegar needs to be rinsed away after cleaning, so check that this approach will be suitable for the toy type.

Air dry completely

If you’ve soaked or dampened your children’s play toys, it’s crucial to let them fully dry before using them again. This step will ensure no mould has the opportunity to grow and present a risk to your kids.

We know your little ones will be desperate to have their favourite toy returned to them. That’s why we recommend cleaning their toys in rotation, leaving them one or two to play with whilst the others dry.

Check your toy storage

There isn’t much point in going through all the effort to clean your kids’ toys if you’re storing them somewhere dirty or unhygienic. So, make sure you’re also regularly dusting, disinfecting and reorganising your toy storage.

This is also a great opportunity to declutter. If you come across any toys that are broken or no longer being used by your children, consider donating them to a friend or charity or disposing of them responsibly.
