Radiator Cleaning: An Easy Guide by Haus Maids Winchester

Radiator cleaning might not be one of the first chores on your house maintenance list. But if you want to ensure your radiators work efficiently, keeping them in good condition is crucial.

However, radiators are notoriously tricky to clean. They’re full of small holes and tight gaps. So, it’s no surprise that many of us skip this cleaning task.

Our house cleaners in Winchester have some simple solutions that make the process much easier. Here’s their step-by-step guide to radiator cleaning for you to try at home…

1. Turn off the radiator

First and foremost, make sure your radiator is switched off. Allow it to cool for a couple of hours before attempting to clean it to avoid burning yourself or melting your equipment.

You can also take this opportunity to prep the area. Place an old towel or sheet beneath the radiator to catch any water and dirt that might fall whilst radiator cleaning.

2. Tackle the interiors

Removing dust and debris from inside your radiator is one of the most challenging parts of this job. However, our Winchester home cleaning experts have a few tricks to share…

  • Use a handheld vacuum with a crevice tool to get down the back and between the panels of your radiator.
  • Dislodge debris with a flexible radiator brush, inserting it at the top and moving it from side to side.
  • Get rid of lingering dust by blowing air through gaps with a hairdryer.

3. Dust the outside

Now, you can tackle the dried-in dust and dirt on the outside of your radiator. Use your vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove as much as possible. Then, take a dry microfibre cloth to get rid of any lingering dust before you start to clean.

4. Clean with soapy water

You’re ready to clean your radiator, but there are a few things to keep in mind before you get started.

Avoid using anything abrasive (like a scourer) on your radiator, as it could strip away paint or scratch surfaces. You should also avoid bleach, as it can damage your radiator, and antibacterial products that can pose a fire risk.

Instead, take a simple mixture of warm water and dish soap and apply it with a soft sponge or cloth. Use gentle circular motions to buff away grime.

5. Dry and turn back on

After you’re happy that your radiators are as clean as you can get them, use a dry cloth to dry them thoroughly. Concentrate on the valves, as these can get rusty or worn if exposed to water over time.

And just like that, the radiator cleaning is done! Simply turn your radiator on and enjoy efficient home heating.
