How Do You Clean a Freezer? A Guide by Haus Maids Eastleigh
Cleaning our freezers is often one of those jobs that fall to the bottom of the list. It takes a bit of planning, which means it’s easy to forget about. But cleaning your freezer is essential to extending its usable life and keeping your food safe.
So, how do you clean a freezer properly? Our house cleaners in Eastleigh have shared a simple guide to getting it done quickly!
Step 1: Empty your freezer
First things first, you’ll need to take everything out of your freezer, including all food and removable components. You should do this at least once a year to keep your machine in good condition.
Ideally, it’s a good idea to plan ahead so you don’t have a fresh batch of food shopping to store whilst you defrost and clean the freezer. Most food items should be okay outside the freezer for a couple of hours. Still, we recommend using a cool box with ice packs to keep your items safe if you think the process might take longer.
Step 2: Defrost the freezer
Next, you’ll need to turn off and unplug your freezer. Even if you don’t have a lot of ice buildup, it’s not a bad idea to do this to ensure your freezer keeps working properly.
You can just leave the door open to let the ice melt naturally. Or, if you need to speed up the process, try placing some bowls of hot water inside or using a hairdryer on a low setting. You can use a wooden or plastic spatula to remove bigger chunks of ice, but avoid using metal instruments that might damage the lining.
Step 3: Clean the components
In the meantime, wash all removable freezer compartments with a simple mix of dish soap and warm water. For stubborn marks, try adding a little baking soda to the water and letting the component sit in it for a while.
Once you’re happy with the result, rinse and leave all the shelves and drawers to dry completely.
Step 4: Clean the interior
Take a bowl of dish soap and warm water, and soak your sponge in it. Use this to scrub the inside of your freezer, making sure to tackle all walls and seals.
Again, once you’ve removed all the dirt and food from your freezer, rinse away the soap and let it dry. Our Eastleigh home cleaning experts suggest using a clean, dry towel to get rid of all moisture. This will prevent the buildup of ice.
Step 5: Dry, assemble and switch on
You’re almost done learning how you clean a freezer! All that’s left to do is replace all the shelves and drawers you took out and switch the machine back on. Make sure you finish by giving the outside of your freezer a good wipe-down to leave it sparkling.
Wait for the freezer to get back to the right temperature before adding your food items back in. And that’s it — your freezer is now clean and ready for use again.
