How to Attract Wildlife to Your Garden in Farnham This Winter
Our Farnham home cleaning experts usually share advice about caring for the inside of your home. But what about the great outdoors?
We’re all guilty of neglecting our gardens during the colder months. But this winter, we want to help you learn how to attract wildlife to your garden.
So, here are four top tips that your whole family can take on board to give nature a helping hand when it’s needed most…
1. Make room for toads
Did you know that toads actually live away from water for most of the year? They also don’t hibernate in winter, so it’s important to look out for these quirky amphibians.
You can provide shelter for toads by leaving a large plant pot upside down with a small opening somewhere cool and shaded. Ideally, fill it with leaves, moss and soil to create a cosy and inviting toad home.
2. Feed and house the birds
If you want your kids to learn how to attract wildlife to your garden, this is a great place to start. Birds tend to start looking for places to nest at the start of the year, so winter is the ideal moment to install a bird box and feeder. Your children will love watching birds raising their chicks in the coming months!
It’s especially important to leave food out for your flying friends during the colder seasons when sustenance is scarce. High-fat foods like peanuts and sunflower hearts are a great option. Equally, you could plant a tree to provide for future years. According to the Woodland Trust, tree planting season runs from November to March, so now’s the perfect time.
3. Watch out for hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are adorable but vulnerable creatures. They typically hibernate through most of autumn and winter, but experts say they might still pop out to gather supplies — especially in milder temperatures.
So, it’s worth leaving some food out at all times. Try popping some cat biscuits under some cover; these will remain edible for up to a week.
4. Maintain water supplies
Frozen water can be a real problem for animals. So, keep an eye on your bird baths, ponds and other water sources, thawing them if necessary. You may also want to leave a bowl of water somewhere in your garden to provide an extra water source for any wildlife that comes exploring.
Top tip: If you’re lucky enough to have a pond in your garden or nearby, leave a football floating in it. Doing this will create an air hole in the surface for any creatures hibernating underneath.
