Embracing Plastic Free July in Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh
We all know that plastic pollution is a huge contributor to climate change.
The manufacture of plastic products is terrible for the planet, as they’re mostly made from fossil feedstocks. Plus, with so much single-use plastic ending up in our oceans or on the shores of coastal regions worldwide, we must all try to mitigate our reliance on plastic.
Unfortunately, conventional cleaning products and household waste often contain plenty of plastic. So, as Plastic Free July comes to a close, our expert house cleaners in Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh have shared some of their top tips for reducing plastic waste in your home and on the move.
What is Plastic Free July?
Plastic Free July is an annual event run by the Plastic Free Foundation to raise awareness of the social and environmental impact of plastic pollution.
This global movement helps millions of people become part of the solution to plastic pollution — leading to cleaner streets, oceans and communities.
The initiative aims to show people how easy it is to reduce single-use plastic waste in their everyday lives, whether at home, on the go or at work or school. Individuals in over 190 countries have already participated by finding practical plastic-free solutions and creating new eco-friendly habits.
So, as a resident of Eastleigh and the surrounding areas, what could you do to continue the spirit of Plastic Free July?
Stay on top of your recycling
We know, recycling can be a bit of a chore. But if you’re properly prepared and keep up with it each week, it doesn’t need to be.
Here are three ways you can make sure you’re recycling efficiently…
- Flatten all your cardboard before putting it in the bin. That way, you’ll fit more in, which means fewer trips to the trash!
- Ensure you’re rinsing all your food and drinks containers so they’re uncontaminated and can be effectively recycled. As a bonus, keeping a clean bin will minimise unpleasant smells and keep insects at bay.
- Throw your recycled plastics in loose rather than in a plastic bag, as these can’t be recycled and therefore create unnecessary waste.
Not sure where to dispose of your recycling? Find local recycling banks in Eastleigh here.
And don’t forget: supermarkets often have recycling points for soft plastics and electronics. So, if you can’t get rid of your plastics with your household waste, look out for a station next time you’re doing your weekly shopping.
Try a zero-waste shop
Instead of replacing your bottles and glasses of food, drink and cleaning products with new plastic every time, why not simply refill at your local zero-waste shop?
There are a few around Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh, such as The Spinney 53 and The Hampshire Refillery. Check out their cost-effective, planet-friendly stock!
Choose to refuse single-use plastic
A bottle of soda. A cup of coffee. A tea bag. A cotton bud. A shopping bag. Once you think about it, you’ll realise how much single-use plastic you consume week in, week out — often without even realising it.
Fortunately, it’s not too difficult to choose plastic-free alternatives. From keeping a ‘bag for life’ and reusable flask in your car to choosing loose tea on your next cafe trip, there are lots of convenient switches you can make.
When it comes to cleaning your home, this could be as easy as ditching disposable cloths and mops for reusable ones made from eco-friendly materials like bamboo, or refilling plastic containers of antibacterial spray at one of the zero-waste shops you’ve found nearby.
