How to clean your kettle
At this time during the Covid-19 crisis, we are sure you are drinking lots of cups of tea, and the taste of your tea has never seemed so important, so the last place you want a build-up of limescale is the inside of your kettle.
Many homes in the UK are living in a hard-water area. This means limescale (the residue left in your kettle by hard-water) can continue to cause you a problem.
Good news, limescale is easy to treat if you find it in your kettle — follow our simple method to remove it, and help prevent it coming back.
In times gone by, the element in the kettle was always exposed and in contact with the water, so limescale was one of the biggest causes of kettles breaking.
These days, our kettles mostly have the element hidden behind a metal base plate which reduces the risk of damage andincreases the kettles shelf life. This doesn’t eliminate limescale though, its still a problem.
Metal kettles still get coated on the inside and on the base plate with limescale which if dislodged, leaves unappealing bits in the water which can make your Tea taste foul. Plastic kettles are made of polypropylene, which doesn’t attract scale, but the metal base plate will.
How to treat limescale
For an easy way to remove limescale, firstly make sure you unplug the kettle, and a little post-it note saying not to use stuck to it, fill the kettle with a mixture of half white vinegar and half cold water, leave to soak for 12 hours. After this the limescale will come off easily. Rinse thoroughly to remove all vinegary odours, then boil up fresh water after the treatment and empty to make sure all odours are removed.
There are also chemical descalers are available to buy, some designed specifically for metal kettles and others for plastic models. Descaler Sachets can be used on all kettles and are environmentally friendly.
We recommend you do this descaling every four to eight weeks to keep your Tea tasting fantastic – don’t leave it to long between cleans, the more scale build up you have the more difficult it will be to remove it.
