If cleaning the house seems like a giant, intimidating task, you’re probably doing it wrong. Here are five ways to mean housework a simple and enjoyable task.
Start small
If you start and end each day by tidying a little bit, you’ll never be overwhelmed with housework again. Keeping your house clean begins with good habits like making your bed every morning and cleaning the dishes right after you cook. Before you leave for work in the morning, take four or five minutes to tidy up. That way, you’ll return home to a clean, organised house.
Have fun
Housework can be fun if you have headphones or a portable speaker. If you hate mopping the floor, listen to an energetic playlist of your favourite songs and clean to the beat of the music. If you haven’t been able to read much lately, listen to audiobooks and podcasts while you do the dishes. If neither of those sound appealing, put on your favourite TV show or a movie and binge watch while fold laundry.
Simplify your chore list
If your chore list is filled with huge projects, break them up into manageable steps. Grab a blank piece of paper and make four columns: daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. Under daily, list chores like making your bed, tidying, and doing dishes. Under weekly and monthly, list chores like vacuuming and dusting, depending on how often you do those things. Under yearly, list projects like cleaning your oven, shampooing the carpet, and wiping down the ceiling fan blades.
Stock your cleaning supplies
Instead of using one large caddy to store all your cleaning supplies, only fill it with what you use on a weekly basis. Make sure you have spray bottles of all-purpose cleaner and window cleaner, paper towels, a rag, duster, scrub brush, sponge, and an old toothbrush for tight corners. Keep the caddy in your bathroom so it’s easily accessible.
It doesn’t have to be perfect
Don’t sweat the small stuff. It doesn’t have to be perfect. The goal is to make cleaning a fun habit that fits into your busy lifestyle. Worrying about doing a perfect job is only going to make you procrastinate more.
